Description
Fast food restaurants present a visual and psychic duality that I find interesting to paint. They promise to fulfill the basic human needs of food and human company but in actuality they replace the sustenance of both good food and community with a fast, unhealthy, and isolated “meal on the go”. I like to paint them at night the best so that I can explore the unnatural illumination of neon and street lights within the ambient light of the night sky.
Like Van Gogh’s lurid reds and greens in “The Night Café” or Edward Hopper’s acidic “Night Hawks” – light becomes its own material substance and can communicate deeper psychological elements and unease.
